A suspected drug dealer has been killed in a reported gunfight with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Teknaf of Cox's Bazar.
The incident took place in the early hours of Sunday at the Keari canal area near no 14 bridge which is adjacent to Teknaf land port.
The deceased Md Syed Alam is the son of Md Syed Ahmed of ward no 1 in Teknaf municipality and a listed drug dealer, said BGB.
Lt Col Md Foysol, commanding officer of Teknaf no 2 BGB battalion, said a BGB patrol team took position in the area, on information that a large supply of yaba would be smuggled into the country from Myanmar.
BGB saw two 'suspicious' men beside Keari canal, and saw another swimming across to Bangladesh from Myanmar, said the BGB officer.
When the trio met, they realized the presence of the BGB patrol team and tried to escape the area. As BGB chased them, miscreants ambushed BGB with firearms and the latter was forced to retaliate in self defence, according to the BGB officer.
After the gunfight that lasted about 3-4 minutes, BGB discovered Syed with bullet wounds. BGB took him to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctor pronounced him dead, added Lt Col Foysal.
BGB recovered 40,000 yaba tablets, a light gun(LG), and a round of bullets from the spot.
