Rusty grenade recovered from iron scrap in Chittagong

A rusty but live grenade was recovered from the iron scrap of a re-rolling factory in Chittagong.

According to the Counter-Terrorism Unit of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP), the grenade was recovered from the factory of Bangladesh Steel Re-Rolling Mills (BSRM) located at Sonapahar area under Zorarganj police station of Mirsarai upazila Wednesday noon.

Workers of the factory first spotted the grenade-like object while sorting out the iron scrap and informed the factory authorities. Later, the factory authorities informed the local police.

On information, a team of Bomb Disposal Unit rushed to the spot and deactivated the grenade.

Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, Inspector Rajesh Barua, In-Charge of Bomb Disposal Unit said that the defused the grenade.

“Although the grenade gathered rust, it was live. We have been able to neutralize the grenade without any untoward incident on Wednesday night,” said the police official.   

“The factory authority told us that it might have come with the iron scrap consignments recently imported from Japan which was unloaded at Chittagong port between June 21 and July 1,” he added.
