A suspected criminal has been killed in a “gunfight” with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
The “gunfight” took place at Tongi, Gazipur in the early hours of Tuesday.
The deceased Jahangir Hossain alias Pinku, 40, was a listed criminal and had around 14 cases filed against him under murder, arms and drug acts. He was the son Abu Jafar of Gosair Char in Faridganj upazila of Chandpur district
RAB-1 Senior ASP Md Kamruzzaman confirmed the matter.
Two foreign pistols, two magazines, 11 rounds of bullets, three empty cartridges and 1,900 pieces of yaba pills were seized from the spot.
“Acting on a tip-off, RAB came to know the whereabouts of some wanted criminals and that they were staying at the TNT field area under Tongi East police station. Later, a patrol team of RAB-1 went to the spot around 1:30am on Tuesday to capture them,” the RAB ASP said.
Sensing the presence of RAB members, the criminals opened fire on them, while in self-defense RAB also fired back, the RAB official said.
At the time of exchanging fire, Pinku was shot. Later, he was taken to Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
One RAB member was also injured during the “gunfight”, ASP Kamruzzaman said.
