A suspected drug dealer has been killed in a reported gunfight with the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Chittagong.
The incident took place at Beribadh area under EPZ police station in the city in the early hours of Saturday.
The deceased who could not be identified immediately is a young male presumed to be around 25-years-old, confirmed Mahmudul Hasan Mamun, assistant director (media) of RAB 7.
He said: “RAB conducted a drive after receiving a tip-off about a consignment of contraband yaba pills arriving at Beribadh area in the city. While RAB members were setting up a check post, five young men were spotted at the site.”
“When asked to halt, the men abruptly began firing on the RAB members, forcing the elite force to retaliate in self-defence triggering a gunfight.”
“At one point, the criminals retreated and fled the scene, leaving behind a bullet-riddled body of one of their associates. Later, RAB recovered the dead body and sent to a local hospital.”
RAB officials also recovered 100,000 yaba pills, a foreign-made pistol and one magazine, a locally-made firearm and six bullets from the scene of the crime, the RAB official added.
