A large number of Bangladesh police personnel, leaving their near and dear ones, are working round the clock at the field level to keep law and order across the country during the coronavirus pandemic.
They have the highest possibility of contracting the deadly coronavirus (Covid-19). However, reports are coming in that many among the police force are being forced to vacate their rented homes since the deadly coronavirus gripped Bangladesh.
In Thakurgaon municipality, the family of a Sadar police station official is being forced by a landlord to leave his rented apartment, fearing the official could contract coronavirus and pass it on to the landlord's family.
Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge (operation) Nazmul Haque said he rented the second floor of a two-storied building for his family in front of the Naresh Chowhani graveyard in the municipality.
In the beginning, landlord Ratan would behave well with his family. However, the house owner recently started insisting he leave his flat after the coronavirus crisis began.
Nazmul added that Ratan is continuously hurling abusive words at his family members and behaving bizarrely when his wife Jahanara Khatun went up to the roof to put out clothes to dry.
His wife Jahanara Khatun Nupur said : "We are facing rough behaviour from landlord Ratan and his wife every day."
However, this is not the first time that a police personnel is being harassed by the landlord Ratan. Prior to that, a police constable and an assistant sub inspector of the same police station were forced to leave the rented house.
When contacted regarding the allegations, Ratan said it was a misunderstanding and the problem was sorted out.
Speaking on the matter, Thakurgaon Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tanvirul Islam said: "We have heard of the incident and are considering to take legal action against the landlord.
"Police, health workers, and the Army are regarded as frontline fighters in the war against the deadly coronavirus. So, if anyone tries to harass them, we will take administrative action," said Deputy Commissioner Dr AKM Kamruzzaman.
