A local protest against the use of low quality bricks in a road construction at Kaliganj upazila of Jhenaidah compelled Subarna Rani Saha, the upazila nirbahi officer of Kaliganj to halt the project.
According to locals a 500 metre road was under constructed from Boro Dauti of Jamal union in Kaliganj to Nakobaria, under the Herring Bone Bond (HBB) project with a budget of Tk26,06,800 provided by the Department of Disaster Management.
The project was to be completed using first grade quality bricks under the supervision of Upazila Project Implementation Office.
But the contractor company for the project was using substandard bricks in the construction. Outraged locals protested and forced the company to stop the construction on Sunday. But the company resumed work the next day.
On Monday locals informed Subarna Rani Saha, the upazila nirbahi officer, who ordered that the work be halted.
Subarna Rani said: "I have halted construction works after visiting the location and ordered the use of first grade materials from now."
Abdullah Helal Masud, upazila project implementation officer (PIO) confirmed the allegations and said the work has been temporarily stopped. The construction will resume once the contractors acquire first grade bricks for construction.
Ziaur Rahman Khan, deputy project manager of the disaster management department said: "We will take necessary measures to ensure the quality of the project."
