Rajshahi MP gets death threat over phone

MP Fazle Hossein Badsha of Rajshahi Sadar received death threats over the phone for his position  regarding government eviction drives along the Gangopara canal.

On behalf of MP Badsha, Rajshahi Mahanagar Workers Party member Moniruddin Panna filed a case in this connection with Boalia Thana on Sunday.

"Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) ordered evacuation of areas beside the local Gangopara canal, which MP Badsha tried to delay for humanitarian reasons," the written complaint said.

Local people and MP Badsha staged a protest against this drastic step taken by BWDB, the complaint added.

The police complaint also said: "During the protest, a man named Masud Rana called MP Badsha on his phone and threatened him, telling to withdraw his support for the movement if he wanted to live longer."

Speaking about the eviction drive, MP Badsha said around 3,000 people live near the Gangopara canal.

"On Thursday, BWDB officials made a mike announcement to evacuate the slum, against which locals protested with a human chain.

"These people have no place to go this winter, and I support their movement for a very practical reason."

He urged the BWDB officials to reconsider their decision and arrange for rehabilitation.

Contacted, Executive Engineer of the Rajshahi Water Development Board, Kahinur Alam, said: "We are running this eviction drive as per government rules under the direction of the deputy commissioner.

"We are done with 80% of the eviction, and the rest will be carried out as well with or without the cooperation of locals."
