Shipping ministry urges caution when buying riverside flats in Dhaka

The Ministry of Shipping has urged citizens to be cautious when buying riverside flats in Dhaka.

The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has recovered 669.18 acres of land adjacent the Buriganga, Turag, Shitalakkha, Dholesshori and Balu rivers after evicting 17,901 illegal settlements in the last 10 years, according to a press statement issued by the ministry on Tuesday.

“During eviction drives, it has been observed that many private housing societies allotted plots or flats to leases after grabbing land by rivers. The buyers of the flats have been affected by the eviction drives,” the statement said.

AKM Arif Uddin, co-directorof Dhaka River Port under the BIWTA, said the housing companies evicted during the drives include Bosila Housing, Amin Momin Housing, Modhu City, Afsana Housing Ltd, Chandrima Housing, Dhaka Uddan Housing, AkashNila Western City Housing Ltd, Anirban Housing, Silicon City, Amin Mohammad Group Housing, and Biswas Builders.

“We have evicted Biswas Builders and are in the process of removing their buildings. The buildings of Amin Momin Housing have already been removed. We are also in the process of removing the buildings of AkashNila Western City Housing Ltd, Anirban Housing, and Silicon City,” he added.
