Over 100 shops gutted in Chittagong hawkers’ market

Over 100 shops have been gutted in a fire that broke out at Jahur Hawkers’ Market in Chittagong.

The fire started around 3:50am and was doused around 6am on Saturday, reports BSS.

According to Deputy Assistant Director Jashim Uddin  of the Agrabad Control Room of Fire Service and Civil Defence, a total of 15 vehicles from four units brought the fire under control after two and a half hours of frantic effort.

He said: "Most of the shops were of clothing and mattress material. As a result, the fire spread quickly, and destroyed more than 100 shops."

Two of the shop owners were also injured while trying to save their shops from the fire, Jashim added.

He furthered that they were still trying to identify the source of the fire.
