Ferry service along Shimulia-Kathalbari route suspended

Ferry service along the Shimulia-Kathalbari river route has been suspended due to an unusual surge in the currents of the Padma River.

Out of 14 ferries that usually operate along the route, movement of nine ferries remained completely suspended since Wednesday morning.

The remaining four ferries crossed the river slowly with great difficulty.

“As a result, around 300 vehicles have been stuck on both sides due to the halt in ferry movement, causing sufferings to passengers,” Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Kathalbari Ferry Terminal manager Md Salam Hossain Miah said while confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

The BIWTC official said the surging river currents have created whirls around the entrance of Louhajang turning point.

Since morning, it took the ferries almost an hour to cross the river, which in turn increased fuel consumption. Therefore, ferry movements have slowed down.
