A Habiganj court on Monday sentenced four men to life imprisonment in a case over gang raping and then killing a woman in the Nabiganj upazila in 2002.
After finding sufficient proof, Judge Halim Ullah Choudhury of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal handed down the verdict. Two of the six accused were acquitted in court, confirmed Habiganj court Inspector Al Amin.
The convicted Raju Mia, Abdul Mannaf, Babul Mia, and Saidul Islam, all from Nabiganj, upazila were sent to jail in the afternoon. The court also fined them Tk1 lakh each.
On August 20, 2002, the convicts abducted Fateha Begum, 25, and gang raped her in Haripur village, killed her and dumped her body into the nearby Barak river.
Following the incident victim's sister Rowshon Ara lodged a case with the Nabiganj police station accusing six people for rape and murder.
