Torrential rain disrupts road communication in Bandarban

Bandarban road communication is suspended following heavy floods and landslides in the Ruma and Thanchi upazilas.

Sources said, a large chunk of mud had collapsed blocking at least a nine-mile area along the Ruma-Thanchi road affecting communication on Monday.

District administration is making public announcements asking locals to move  into the 126 shelters installed throughout the seven upazilas.

Patrolling teams from the District Administration and Bandarban Red Crescent Unit are inspecting the area.

People of Islampur, Kalaghata, Balaghata, Langipara, Baruar tek, Hafez Ghona are at huge risk of sudden landslide casualties.

Bandarban Deputy Commissioner Daudul Islam said: "We are taking initiatives to move locals from risky areas to our shelters. The constant rain upheaved the water level of the Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers, that might flood the lower areas of the Lama upazila. We are trying our best to lessen the casualties"

30 tourists stuck in Bandarban

At least 30 tourists are stuck in Thanchi, a popular tourist spot, due to sudden flash floods in Bandarban.

According to sources, the water level of the Sangu river rose above the danger level flooding the lower areas of Bandarban. District administration halted all activities in the river from Friday to ensure safety of the people.

Locals along with the tourists are stuck in the river adjacent areas including Remakri, Tindu, Boro Mowdok, Choto Mowdok, Ruma bazar and Boga Lake.

A tourist guide from Thanchi, Jahidul Islam Emon said: "According to information received at least 20 tourists are seen to be stuck in Thanchi's Jinnapara."
