Rooppur housing project corruption: Probe report to be submitted by June 30

The report of the investigation into alleged irregularities in purchasing furniture, and other household items used for furnishing apartments of Green City housing project at Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Project (RNPP) in Pabna, will be submitted by June 30.

Housing and Public Works Minister SM Rezaul Karim said this at an event held at his ministry on Sunday.

“We want to investigate the incident deeply. We have extended the deadline till 30 June. Action will be taken upon receiving the report,” he said.

“We are expecting to receive the report by June 30. It will then be made public, like the report of FR Tower (fire). Nothing will remain a secret,” he said.

RAJUK (Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha) has identified 62 people behind the FR Tower fire, and instructions were given to take necessary actions.

Action will be taken against people who are found guilty in the Rooppur incident, the minister said.

Two probe committees—one from the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, and another from the Public Works Department—have been formed to investigate the matter.

No payment had been made to the contractor companies as yet, and the payment would be made based on the recommendations of the probe committees, and considering the current market price of the products used in the project, said ministry officials.

According to media reports, each of the pillows were reportedly purchased for Tk5,957, with a carrying cost of Tk760. An electric stove reportedly cost Tk7,747, and its lifting cost at Tk6,650. The public works department purchased a room cleaner for Tk12,018, and had it lifted at a cost of Tk6,650.

The purchase price of an electric kettle was reportedly Tk5313, and its carrying cost was Tk2,945. An electric iron cost Tk4,154, and its lifting cost Tk2,945. A refrigerator reportedly cost Tk94,250, and its lifting cost Tk12,521. A television reportedly cost Tk86,970 while its lifting cost was Tk7,698.

A writ petition was filed by Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Sumon, with the High Court, seeking a judicial inquiry on corruption in the Green City housing project at RNPP on May 19.
