Bogra-Nagarbari highway sees 13 deaths in 48 hours

Less than 48 hours after a road collision killed nine people on Sirajganj’s Bogra-Nagarbari Highway, another four lives were lost when a bus veered off the road and crashed.

Around 2:30am Tuesday, a passenger bus, bound for Rangpur from Gazipur’s Konabari, lost control near Sholomail-Tobaria in Sirajganj’s Raiganj upazila. The bus skidded off and fell into a ditch, injuring at least 20 and killing four people.

The deceased were identified as: Hamidul Islam, 34, Shahjahan Ali, 35, Fazlul Haque, 35, and Ataur Rahman, 32. The first three were from Gaibandha, and the latter from Rangpur. The deceased were all construction workers.

Local police and fire service recovered four bodies from the crash site and rescued 20 people with varying injuries. Police suspect the driver may have been speeding, which led to the accident.

Earlier on Sunday afternoon, a bus collided with a human hauler, colloquially called a leguna, on the Bogra-Nagarbari Highway near Boalia Bazar in Sirajganj.

The Pabna Express bus was headed to Pabna from Dhaka when it tried to avoid ramming a nasimon – a locally-assembled automobile – carrying cattle. In the attempt, the bus swerved and collided with the leguna, killing nine aboard, and injuring two more.

The deceased were identified as: Rezaul Islam, 32, Sobuj Hossain, 30, Mohammad Ali, 35, Joyan Uddin, 34, Nure Islam, 33, Fazlul Haque, 45, Akter Hossain, 42, Abdul Mannan, 45, and Hafizul Islam, 33.

The injured were admitted to local medical facilities for treatment. The police was able to impound the bus, while the driver and helper managed to flee.
