Justice for Nusrat: Demonstrations continue in Dhaka, and nation

Nationwide protests continue to demand justice for Nusrat, an 18-year-old madrasah student, who was set on fire by four burqa-clad assailants on April 6, a little before sitting for her Alim examination.  

A massive human chain was formed in Dhaka on Saturday morning, seeking justice for her murder. 

The demonstration stretched from the prime minister's residence in Ganabhaban, to the president's official residence, Bangabhaban.

Anandadyuti Khelaghar Ashor President, Laboni Shabnam Mukti, protesting from Asad Gate, said the protests will continue as long as Nusrat does not get justice.

Meanwhile, condemning Nusrat’s murder, concerned citizens across the nation demanded exemplary punishment for her killer, Sirajuddaula, and a speedy trial for his associates.

Speakers and participants said these recent atrocities and attacks on women and children are increasing, but liable criminals remain unpunished.

In Thakurgaon, numerous socio-cultural activists formed a human chain in the city’s main intersection. 

In Barisal, socio-cultural human rights activists formed a human chain and organized procession rallies in the city.

In Bhola, a human chain was organized in Sadar upazila, where students highlighting her tragic death, said these recurring events nationwide demand justice.

In Chapainawabganj, local political and socio-cultural activists gathered in town and took part in a student demonstration. 

In Jhenaidah, local student associations formed a human chain in front of the town’s post office intersection and the main bus terminal, with placards and banners. 

In Brahmanbaria, student rights activists staged a demonstration saying that proper action against sexual offenders was imperative.

In Narsingdi, Bangladesh Human Rights and Press Society activists formed a demonstration in front of the Ghorasal power centre in Polash upazila. Participants said it was everyone’s responsibility to stand against these recurring phenomena. 

In Panchagarh, prominent personalities organized a human chain in Boda upazila, in front of Sonali bank on the Panchagarh-Dhaka Highway.

In Rajbari, rallies and protests were organized on the press club premises, by local social activists, where speakers said they did not wish to witness such incidents in the future.

In Tangail, students organized a human chain in front of the Nirala intersection Shahid Minar.
