Academic activities at Barisal University have been suspended for an indefinite period of time, as students continue to demand the removal of the vice chancellor for allegedly making derogatory remarks.
All classes and examinations have been suspended until further notice, and resident students were directed to vacate the campus dormitories by 5pm on Thursday.
A notice signed by the university registrar was issued early Thursday, informing the students about the administration’s decision.
According to the notice, the university will remain closed for an indefinite period of time, from March 28, for the sake of the security of the students, teachers, and staff; as well as the state of law and order on and around the campus.
Despite the notice, students protested on the campus since the morning.
Their demands include that the vice chancellor withdraw his alleged derogatory comments and that rent for the seminar room decrease.
Meanwhile, promising stern action against students who refuse to accept the administration’s directives, Vice-Chancellor Dr Imamul Huq said: “A certain quarter is trying to create anarchy, in the guise of a students’ movement.
“I expect the students to vacate the dormitories by 5pm on Thursday. Anyone not following the administration’s directives will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.”
Earlier on Wednesday, the students of Barisal University demonstrated demanding the withdrawal of an “offensive comment” made by Dr Huq while addressing a program marking the 49th Independence Day on the campus.
They also boycotted classes and examinations after putting the academic building under lock and key the same morning.
