Wife to die for killing Rangpur public prosecutor Rathish Chandra

A Rangpur court has sentenced Snigdha Sarkar Dipa to death for killing her husband, Public Prosecutor Advocate Rathish Chandra Bhowmik.

Senior District and Session judge ABM Nizamul Haque gave the verdict on Tuesday afternoon, in Dipa's presence, confirmed Public Prosecutor Advocate Abdul Malek.

The court began the trial on October 30, 2018 and gave the verdict after examining 37 prosecution witnesses.

After the verdict was announced, Public Prosecutor Advocate Abdul Malek said: "During the verdict, the judge said Dipa dreadfully betrayed her husband. She destroyed the sanctity of the relationship between a husband and a wife that together creates a family bond.

"Despite having two children, she became involved in an affair with Quamrul, which they [the couple] have both confessed to. Therefore, she has been given the highest form of punishment for killing her husband."

The lawyer’s society is satisfied with this verdict, however, everyone should be aware so that incidents like these are never repeated in society, he added.

Rathish's younger brother Sushanta, his three sisters, and his son were present in the court during the verdict.

Responding to a query about the verdict, Sushanta said although the family is satisfied with the verdict, he will never get his brother back and the pain of losing him will remain in the family forever.

According to the case statement, Dipa reported that Special Public Prosecutor Rathish went missing after leaving his house on March 29, 2018.

Later, police arrested the prime suspect of the case, Quamrul Islam, with whom Dipa had engaged in an extra-marital affair.

Following the matter, the deceased's brother Sushanta Bhowmik filed a case with the police.

On April 4, 2018, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Dipa, who confessed under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, that she and Quamrul murdered Rathish and buried him in a building that was under construction.

During the confession, they admitted to their affair, and said they spiked Rathish's meal with sleeping pills, then strangled him to death in his sleep.

Then, they tried to cover-up the story by saying that Rathish had gone missing.

After an investigation, police submitted charge sheets before the court naming the duo on October 2, 2018. Then, from October 10, police started taking testimonies from witnesses.

The 48-year-old Quamrul reportedly committed suicide inside the Rangpur Central Jail on November 10 last year.

Public Prosecutor Rathish had represented the state in the cases over the killings of Japanese national Kunio Hoshi and Rahmat Ali, a caretaker of a shrine, in Rangpur.
