Two suspected drug peddlers have been killed in a so-called gunfight with the police in Teknaf area of Cox’s Bazar.
The incident occurred in the Katabonia area under Sabrang union on early hours of Sunday. The deceased suspects are Hassan Ali, 35, and Md Hossain Prokash Kamal, 28.
Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, Cox’s Bazar Superintendent of Police ABM Masud Hossain said: “On a tip-off that two gangs of illegal narcotics dealers were engaged in a gunfight in Teknaf, a team of law enforcers conducted a raid.
“Upon seeing the police, the culprits fired on them, forcing law enforcement to retaliate. The perpetrators escaped after the ensuing gunfight. Police later found two bodies in the area, and seized six locally-made guns, 25 bullets, and 10,000 yaba pills.”
Police sources said the body of the two deceased men – Hassan and Kamal – are being kept at Teknaf Health Complex, and will be sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy. The two were accused in several cases filed under the Narcotics Control Act.
Sub Inspector Razu Ahmed Gazi, Assistant Sub Inspector Mithun Kumar Bhowmik, and Constable Ibrahim Khalil were also injured in the gunfight, and are presently undergoing treatment at Teknaf Hospital, said police sources.
