Five people, including a child, have been killed after a passenger bus smashed into a tractor, parked on the roadside, in Gaibandha’s Palashbari Upazila.
The accident took place on the Gaibandha-Palashbari road, near the Upazila Health Complex around 12:30am on Saturday.
The deceased have been identified as – Emdadul Haque, 28, Kakoli Begum, 22, Hena Khatun, 7, Afroza Begum, 30 from Shundarnagar upazila and Shumon Miah, 30, from Patukhali
At least nine other passengers were also injured.The identities of the victims could not be known yet.
They have been admitted to the Upazila Health Complex.
Palashbari police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mostafizar Rahman said a Dhaka-bound bus of ‘Anabil Paribahan’ from Gaibandha rammed into the tractor at high speed. The bus then hit an electric pole.
Four passengers were killed on the spot, while an eight-year-old, died at the hospital.
Electricity supply to Palashnagar upazila town has been cut off since the accident.
OC Mostafizar said the drivers of the bus and tractor and their assistants had fled the scene
