Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation’s (BIWTC) ferry services, on the Shimulia-Kathalbari route in Munshiganj, have resumed.
The service was halted for five hours due to poor navigability, and was resumed in a limited capacity around 4am Sunday when the situation improved, said BIWTC Assistant General Manager Khandaker Shah Khaled Newaz.
On Saturday morning, ro-ro ferry services were also suspended for that reason.
Even launches and speedboats were prevented from traversing the channel, as several dredgers worked to restore navigability.
As a result of the earlier stoppage, several hundred vehicles have become stuck on both sides of the river—creating long tailbacks and causing untold suffering to passengers on their way back from Eid holidays.
Thousands of passengers are also stuck at the launch terminal with the route’s 87 launches and 400 speedboats forced to wait.
