3 bombs recovered during raid in Narayanganj militant hideout

The Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) of police has completed an operation on a four-story building in Rupganj, Narayanganj, suspected to be a militant hideout.

Three bombs were recovered from the hideout during the raid.

The bomb disposal unit later defused the bombs around 4:45pm on Tuesday.

The operation, which took place from noon to evening on Tuesday, was carried out by ATU members with support from the district and Rupganj police.

Confirming the matter, Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police of Narayanganj, Habibur Rahman, said:  "During the raid in a room on the third floor of the building, three bombs, four machetes, and two extremist books were recovered. The bombs have been defused.

“No one was found in the room, but efforts are ongoing to identify who rented and lived in the room. ATU members are still present at the scene, and a case will be filed regarding this incident," he added.

Earlier in the day, starting at 10am, ATU and law enforcement officers cordoned off the building owned by Saudi expatriate Zakir Miah in the Borpa area of Rupganj. The raid was conducted in the afternoon.

Regarding the operation, ATU Superintendent of Police (Operations) Mohammad Sanaowar Hossain said: "On June 5, a terrorist was arrested in Narsingdi with a rifle. Based on the information obtained from him, we discovered a terrorist base in Netrokona. Later, on June 8-9, we conducted an operation there and found out it was an Ansar al-Islam training camp. No one was found during the raid.

“After extensive searches, a female member was arrested on Monday night from Cox's Bazar. Based on her information, this raid in Rupganj was conducted. The building was surrounded in the morning and the raid was carried out in the afternoon, where we found a locked room. The occupants had fled after learning about the arrests of their associates," he added.

He also said: "Two members used to stay in that room regularly. Both were associated with the Netrokona group. One of them was a trainer, providing IT-related training to new militants. Additionally, a female member used to visit. Many other members would come and go daily.”

“One room contained IT equipment and the other had explosive-related devices. Three bombs were recovered and defused," he added.

Another tenant of the building, Sunnat Mia, said: "A couple with two young children had been living in that room on the third floor for several months. However, I haven't seen them for the past few days.”

“The couple claimed to work in a garment factory on Titash Road in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj. I don't know their names as they didn't interact much with others," he added.
