A lawyer sent a legal notice to the government yesterday, seeking a stop to the airing of all Indian TV channels in Bangladesh within 24 hours.
Advocate Aklas Uddin Bhuiyan sent the legal notice through registry post to the information minister, secretary of information and BTRC chairman.
He sent the notice quoting news published in a national daily about the suicides of two young Bangladeshi girls for “Pakhi dress,” a dress worn by a popular character in a drama serial telecast on an Indian television channel.
Aklas Uddin told the Dhaka Tribune: “The impact of the Indian channels on our society is not positive. It has become one of the major causes for the degradation of our society.”
“On the other hand, India does not telecast any Bangladeshi channels in their country. So there is no logic in permitting Indian channels in our country,” he added.
Aklas said: “If the government does not ban the channels within 24 hours, a writ petition will be filed in public interest.”
