No arrest in six days

Even after six days, police have failed to make any arrests in connection with the killing of Ahsan Habib Sumu, the nephew of AKM Bahauddin Bahar who is a lawmaker in Comilla.

Three police teams led by Additional Police Super Ali Ashraf Bhuiyan are working to nab the accused, who are on the run.

Police are unable to make much headway as there is pressure from the top authorities not to detain the unidentified miscreants, said sources.

On May 29, Sumu was shot while resisting a gun attack at a house in Munsefbari near Comilla Government Victoria College. The attack stemmed from a clash that broke out between two groups, one led by former Chhatra League VP of Comilla Polytechnic Institute Jahirul Islam Rintu and the other by former Chhatra League organising secretary of Victoria College Saleh Ahmed Rasel, over HSC admission to Victoria College.

At one stage, members of Rasel’s group entered a house to shoot a member of Rintu’s group but shot Sumu to death when he attempted to obstruct the attackers.

Following the killing, Sumu’s elder brother Habibus Sayerin filed a murder case against 40 Chhatra League activists with Kotwali police station.
