‘RAB should be under Home Ministry’

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) should be brought under direct command of the Ministry of Home Affairs, senior Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta suggests.

“RAB should be modernised as it has become an elite force. Apart from that, the Ministry of Home Affairs, not the police department, should have the authority over RAB,” Suranjit, also a member of the Awami League Advisory Council, said while addressing a discussion at the Diploma Engineers Institute auditorium in the capital yesterday.

Suranjit said he was embarrassed by the deterioration of law and order situation in the country.

“On Thursday a businessman was killed in Motijheel. A clash between two factions of Chhatra League left one dead in Comilla. This is really embarrassing,” he observed.

In view of the present political situation, Suranjit called on members of the law enforcement agencies to play a crucial role in ensuring law and order in the country.

Lambasting BNP Senior Vice-chairman Tarique Rahman for his remarks that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was a failed politician, Suranjit said Tarique was distorting the history of Bangladesh from London.

“There is nothing to say in response to Tarique’s statement. The people will respond to this. At a time when the country is on the way of achieving peace and development, BNP is making inconsistent statements,” he added.

Yesterday’s discussion was arranged by Bangabandhu Academy.
