Sumi’s bail bond accepted, no bar to release

A Dhaka court yesterday accepted the bail bond submitted on behalf of juvenile accused Khaleda Khatun Sumi, domestic help of slain Special Branch inspector Mahfuzur Rahman and his wife, in a case filed for murdering the couple.

Sumi’s counsel Syed Nazmul Huda told the Dhaka Tribune: “Following the acceptance of the bail bond, there is no bar to release her from the National Juvenile Correction Centre in Gazipur.”

Judge Zakia Parvin of the First Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka passed the order.

Earlier in the day, Sumi’s mother Saleha Khatun and her step father Nur Mohammad alias Nurul Amin appeared before the court and her mother submitted her voter identity card to prove her identity.

The court also warned Sumi’s mother and her counsels that action would be taken if they did not appear before court during hearing of the case.

On May 26, the court did not accept the bail bond as Sumi’s mother could not produce her national identity card. Sumi was indicted on May 20 when the court also granted her bail on a Tk20,000 bond in the sensational murder case. The court fixed June 16 for starting trial against her.

Another court on May 6 framed charges against Oishee Rahman – daughter of the couple – and two of her friends Mizanur Rahman Rony and Mahfuzur Rahman Jony. The case is set to begin on June 5 with the testimony of prosecution witnesses. SB official Mahfuz Rahman and his wife Swapna Rahman were found dead in their rented house in Chamelibagh of the capital on August 16 last year.

During interrogation, Oishee said she killed her parents with help of Sumi.
