A Dhaka court yesterday ordered Khilkhet police station to register a regular case in place of a complaint and take necessary action against 16 shareholders of Regency Hotel who are accused of vandalism and theft of hotel property.
Additional chief metropolitan magistrate Ali Masud Sheikh gave the order after Arif Motahar, the hotel’s managing director (MD), filed a complaint as Khilkhet police refused to file a case against the 16 shareholders.
According to the MD’s petition, the 16 accused booked rooms at the hotel from February 18 to April 24. On the last day of their stay, they allegedly brought in some 20-25 hired criminals who ransacked the hotel and beat up staff members.
The accused also took away 40 walkie-talkie sets, 10 computers, four laptops, Tk10 lakh in cash and some important documents, including cheque books, licences and passports.
Arif mentioned that the accused, as general shareholders, were only entitled to yearly dividends, but they demanded more money from the hotel’s proceeds.
