The Anti-Corruption Commission questioned five people, including three officials of the capital’s Rampura police station, yesterday, on charges of stealing gold bars that had been seized in anti-smuggling drives.
ACC Deputy Director Jatan Kumer Ray questioned Sub-Inspector Manzurul Islam, Constables Wahidul Islam and Akash Chowdhury, informer Mahfuz Alam Rony and driver Sajib Shikder at the commission’s Shegunbagicha office, an official told reporters.
On April 27, ACC interrogated OCs Kripa Sindhu Bala and Nasim Ahmed, SI Moniruzzaman and second officer Kamruzzaman of the Rampura police. 14 other officials, including some from the detective branch, were also grilled as witnesses.
Four among the five interrogated today, were arrested from Narayanganj, Gazipur, and Bogra for possession of 149 gold bars.
On March 13, a gang of smugglers abandoned 235 gold bars in a car in the capital’s Banasree area when they were being pursued by a patrol team. However, after searching the vehicle, police claimed to have found only 70 bars inside.
Driver Samir Biswas and suspect Jahid Hossain were later detained when they went to the Rampur police station to claim the car. They told police that there were 235 gold bars in the car.
Later an investigation was launched and a case was filed for the alleged stealing of the gold bars.
