Quader laments misuse of Section 57

Roads, Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said it was unfortunate that Section 57 of the Information and Communication Technology Act was being misused. He made the statement after inaugurating the construction work of the track and elevated station of the Metro Rail project in Agargaon on Wednesday. The minister said: “Misuse the Section 57 of ICT Act is very unfortunate and it needs to be stopped.” “Section 57 of the ICT Act was introduced to stop cyber crime. But people are misusing the act for trifling matters and what happened in Khulna is very unfortunate,” the Awami League general secretary added. Earlier on Monday, a journalist by the name of Abdul Latif Moral was arrested under Section 57 of the Information and Communication Technology Act. Morol, correspondent of a local daily in Khulna, was sued by another journalist over publishing a post allegedly demeaning local MP and State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Narayan Chandra Chanda. Morol had allegedly criticised the lawmaker for the livestock and poultry he distributed among poor people, some of which did not last long and died soon after being distributed.
