The government is likely to impose a three-month ban on netting, transporting and exporting fishes from Mohalchhari Lake in Khagrachhari from May 8 with a view to ensuring safe spawning and protect the breeding of fish from any disturbances.
Mohalchhari Upazila Fishery Officer Faruk Hossain confirmed the ban.
He said he had informed fishermen, who are maintaining life through netting 270 different species of fishes in Mohalchhari lake, stretching about 12,000 hectors of land, through loud speaker.
“We have already prepared a list of 1,368 professional fishermen, who live at 15 villages under the upazila, Faruk Hossain added.”
“We sent the list of fishermen to project office. We are hoping that the department concerned would take measures so that they could main their family through alternative profession during the ban period,” he added.
Fisherman Robiul Hossain and Farid Mia of Seletipara, Hemo Ranjan Chakma and Bakul Chakma of Singhinala, Ratna Chakma and Riton Chakma of Jaduganala under Mohalchhari upazila in Khagrachhari said they were informed about the matter.
But they apprehended that it would be difficult for them to maintain family without fishing.
