Salam Pintu's bodyguard gives deposition in Aug 21 case

A Dhaka court dealing with the August 21 grenade attack case on an Awami League rally on Sunday recorded the statement of a constable posted to house 9/A of Dhanmondi where Abdus Salam Pintu lived.

Former BNP deputy minister Abdus Salam Pintu is an accused in the case.

Constable Habibur Rahman made his deposition as the 69th prosecution witness to the case.

On March 25, 2008, the witness also gave a statement to police under section 161 in connection with the August 21 granade attack.

In his deposition on Sunday, Habibur said he was posted in front of the 9/A Makhon Villa on road 15, Dhanmondi, where Pintu lived on the second floor. His brother Selim also lived in the house.

“As far as I knew, the house was owned by Selim's fater-in-law,” he told the court.

He said the house had a pre-wedding celebration for Pintu's brother Moulana Mohammad Tajuddin, an absconding accused of the granade attack case.

After the ceremony, Pintu went to his government house in Dhanmondi.

“My duty was not shifted there. So, I did not go there,” he told the court.

Habibur added that he was posted there several times before August 21 and saw Tajuddin visit the house frequently.

On July 23, the court summoned a former DGFI official and three other constables to appear before it on Sunday to narrate as witnesses what they knew about the August 21 grenade attack.

Among the witnesses, Habibur Rahman narrated his experience on Sunday, while two other policemen – Ahsan Habib and Al Mamun – are likely to appear before it on Monday.

The date for recording the statement of Manirul Islam, a suspended official of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence, is yet to be fixed.

Earlier, the same court recorded statements of 68 prosecution witnesses, including the complainant.

The August 21 grenade attack was carried out while the incumbent Prime Minister and then the opposition leader Sheikh Hasina was addressing a party rally on Bangabandhu Avenue.
