Blood test confirms ‘Chikungunya’ in Dhaka

Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Rehabilitation (IEDCR) under the DGHS have recently confirmed the prevalence of the Chikungunya fever, widely known as Lengra Jor (Limping Fever) in the capital, after testing blood samples of 440 city dwellers, sources said.

The findings came in the dengue prevalence survey, administered between the months of September and October, in four thanas in Dhaka, to find out the prevalence rates of dengue and chikungunya fever.

The samples were randomly collected from the city’s Mohakhali, Dhanmondi, Mothijeel and Kamrangirchar area. The Aedes aegypti mosquitos were pointed out as the main vector of both Dengue and Chikungunya fever in the survey. Its findings though, has not been made public yet.

Professor Dr Mahmudur Rahman, director at the IEDCR told the Dhaka Tribune that “There have been confirmation of dengue and chikungunya fever bearers having been found in the survey.”

However, he would not reveal the actual number of patients, before officially announcing the findings of the survey.

West Bengal of India has observed one of the recent Chikungunya outbreaks, which can be deadly if not diagnosed properly.
