Bangladesh sees zero Covid deaths, 81 new cases in a day

Bangladesh has reported no deaths from the coronavirus on Friday, for a second day in a row, with 81 new cases logged in the 24 hours to 8am.

According to latest figures released by the health directorate, the overall caseload in the country now stands at 1,951,658 while fatalities at 29,122.

A total of 7,413 samples were tested across the country, for a positivity rate of 1.09%.

Another 893 people recovered from Covid-19 across the country taking the total recovery to 1,882,197.

The latest figures put the recovery rate at 96.44% and the mortality rate at 1.49%.

Globally, more than 488 million people have been infected by the novel coronavirus and over 6.14 million have died as of Thursday morning, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

The number of people killed by the coronavirus surged by more than 40% last week across the world, likely due to changes in how Covid-19 deaths were reported across the Americas and by newly adjusted figures from India, UNB reported citing a World Health Organization report released Wednesday.

In its latest weekly report on the pandemic, the UN health agency said the number of new coronavirus cases fell everywhere, including in WHO’s Western Pacific region, where they had been rising since December.

About 10 million new Covid-19 infections and more than 45,000 deaths were reported worldwide over the past week, following a 23% drop in fatalities the week before.

WHO has said repeatedly that Covid-19 case counts are likely a vast underestimate of the coronavirus’ prevalence. The agency cautioned countries in recent weeks against dropping their comprehensive testing and other surveillance measures, saying that doing so would cripple efforts to accurately track the spread of the virus.
