Covid-19: 946 infected for every 100,000 people in Bangladesh

An average of 946 people have been infected with Covid-19 for every 100,000 people in Bangladesh, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS)

DGHS spokesperson Dr Nazmul Islam made the remark during the regular media bulletin on Covid-19 on Wednesday.

More than 1.5 million people in the country have been infected with the virus, so far, which is lower than just India’s 30 million total infections, Indonesia’s 4.2 million and Thailand’s 1.6 million, among the other Southeast Asian countries. 

At the same time, for every 100,000 people, 2,453 people in India have been infected with the deadly virus. The rate is 1,543, in Indonesia, 2,384 in Thailand, 2,146 in Nepal and 2,434 in Sri Lanka.

In the last week, as many 1,187 people died from the virus in India. In Thailand, the number is 705, whereas 629 died in Indonesia.

Over the same period, 144 people in Bangladesh have lost their lives after contracting the coronavirus, said the DGHS.

Professor Nazmul Islam said: “In last week, a total of 172,461 samples were tested in the country, which is 5% lower than the previous week. Among them, a total of 6,195 people have been infected with the virus, which is 26% lower than the previous week,”

The death toll dropped by 19% over the same period, he said. 

The professor said: “The spike in infection rate during the middle period of the year has now dropped down to less than 5% now, and it was 2.72% on Tuesday.”

The overall trend of last month’s infection indicates a declining rate too, he said.

District-wise, the highest 521,436 people with Covid-19 symptoms were identified in Dhaka last week. In Chittagong, the number was 99,102. 

Among the top 10 districts with the most infections, the lowest 22,890 people with Covid-19 symptoms were identified in Noakhali, according to the DGHS. 

Last week, the highest 13 people died with Covid-19 symptoms in Dhaka division.

More than 50 million people have registered for the Covid-19 vaccine under the government’s inoculation program so far, said the DGHS. 

Moreover, 600,000 others have registered for the vaccine using passports.
