Covid-19: Bangladesh sees 69 more deaths, 1,359 new cases

Bangladesh has registered 69 deaths from Covid-19 in the 24 hours to Sunday morning. With the latest development, the total number of deaths reached 11,579 in the country.

The country also logged a total of 761,943 coronavirus cases with 1,359 people testing positive over the same period.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country with a press release on Sunday.

Of the 69 deceased – 44 men and 25 women – 38 were from Dhaka division; 14 from Chittagong; seven from Barisal; five from Khulna; two from Rangpur; and one each from Rajshahi, Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions.

Of them, 48 patients died in government hospitals, 19 in private hospitals, and two at home. 

Forty-four of the deceased were aged above 60, 11 between 51 and 60, seven between 41 and 50, three between 31 and 40, two between 21 and 30, and one each between 11 and 20 and below 10 age groups. 

So far, 8,434 men (72.84%) and 3,145 women (27.16%) have died from Covid-19 across the country. 

Since the beginning, 6,752 people have died in Dhaka division, 2,099 in Chittagong, 605 in Rajshahi, 708 in Khulna, 351 in Barisal, 395 in Sylhet, 426 in Rangpur, and 243 in Mymensingh.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.52%.

The health authorities said 2,657 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 687,328 patients – 90.21% – have made full recovery across the country.

As many as 14,158 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 420 authorized labs -- government and private -- across the country.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 9.6%. The overall infection rate of the country stands at 13.86%.

Currently, 19,519 people are in isolation and 50,205 are quarantined.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December, 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 3,208,500 lives and infected 152,899,419 people across the world till Sunday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 130,195,553 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 219 countries and territories across the planet.
