Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has received her first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.
The prime minister took the vaccine shot at her official residence, Ganabhaban, on Thursday afternoon, the PM's Assistant Press Secretary Emrul Kayas told Dhaka Tribune.
Her sister Sheikh Rehana, who received her first shot of the vaccine earlier on February 24, was by the prime minister's side at the time.
The prime minister, earlier in January when the government launched the dry run of vaccination, said she would take the vaccine after the people of the country got it.
As of Thursday, more than 3.58 million people have been vaccinated in Bangladesh, since the nationwide vaccination campaign began on February 7, according to the health directorate.
Bangladesh acquired 30 million doses of the vaccine developed by Oxford University and Swedish-British pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca, manufactured by the Serum Institute of India who will deliver it in instalments.
So far, Bangladesh has received two consignments of the vaccine from Serum Institute.
The government is planning to purchase 30 more million doses of the vaccine from the Indian vaccine manufacturer, Health Services Division Secretary Abdul Mannan said recently.
Bangladesh is also set to receive another 10.9 million doses under the Covax scheme - co-led by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Gavi vaccine alliance, and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations - before June.
