Covid-19: Lowest daily test-positivity rate in 9 months

Bangladesh on Tuesday recorded its lowest daily test-positivity rate since April 6. In the 24 hours till Tuesday morning, another 718 cases were detected, at a 5% infection rate.

On April 5, the test-positivity rate was 4.90%. 

This development also marks the continuation of the ongoing trend of single-digit percentage test-positivity rate in the country.

The test-positivity rate did not go below double digits from May 3 to October 23 and again from October 25 to December 14.

This clearly depicts a downward trend in the test-positivity rate, where the average figure to date stands at 15.48%.

In the last 24 hours, Bangladesh also registered 16 more deaths from the deadly virus – taking the number of total fatalities to 7,819.

With the latest figures, the number of all confirmed cases so far jumped to 524,020, according to the daily virus update released on Tuesday by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Deceased

Among the total infections, 89.44% patients have recovered, while 1.49% died since Bangladesh detected its first three Covid-19 positive cases on March 8. 

Of the 16 victims, 10 of whom were male, all of them died in the hospital.

Of the total deceased 14 were aged above 60, one was above fifty, and one were above 30, said the press release.

The division-wise data shows that 10 deaths took place in Dhaka division, two in Sylhet, one each in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna and Mymensingh

Among the total 7,819 deaths, 4,326 deaths occurred in Dhaka division, 1,434 in Chittagong division, 449 in Rajshahi division, 540 in Khulna division, 239 in Barisal division, 298 in Sylhet division, 350 in Rangpur division, and 183 in Mymensingh division.

Recovery

The recovery count rose to 468,681 after another 963 patients were discharged from the hospitals during the period.

A total of 14,363 samples were tested at 194 authorized laboratories across the country during the time.

A total of 3,385,779 samples have so far been tested since the detection of the first Covid-19 cases in the country.

The DGHS said in order to make treatment facilities easily available for the Covid-19 patients, the government has introduced round-the-clock telemedicine services, comprising 100 physicians, in the country.

The DGHS said 23,363,523 people received healthcare services from hotline mobile numbers and health web portals as the government formed a group of medical professionals to provide emergency healthcare services.

Global Situation

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 1,955,092 lives and infected 91,386,293 people across the world till Tuesday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 65,405,428 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 220 countries and territories across the planet.
