Daily Covid-19 case count remains above 2,000 for fifth straight day

The coronavirus pandemic continues to worsen in Bangladesh with another 2,275 cases of Covid-19 confirmed in the 24 hours till Friday morning, taking the total number of cases in the country to 443,434.

The country has now seen more than 2,000 new infections in each of the past five days in a row. The last time such a high number of cases were recorded over a five day period was from August 25-29.

A total 17 more deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the overall death toll to 6,322, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). Bangladesh’s first Covid-19 death was recorded on March 18, exactly 10 days after the first three cases were detected in the country.

The latest daily test positivity rate was 14.58%-- the highest since September 5. A total of 15,607 samples were tested at 117 authorized public and private laboratories across the country.

Meanwhile, the recovery count rose to 358,431 after another 1,709 patients were discharged from hospitals in the 24 hours till Friday morning.

Among the 17 deaths, 11 were male and six were female. One person each was between the ages of 11-20, 21-30 and 31-40, two each between 41-50 and 51-60, and 10 were over 60 years old.

According to the division-wise data, 12 deaths took place in Dhaka division, two in Rangpur, and one each in Chittagong, Rajshahi, and Sylhet.

A total of 2,622,559 samples have been tested since the detection of the first Covid-19 case in the country. Among the total infections, 80.83 % patients have recovered, while 1.43 % have died.

Of the total fatalities, 3,333 occurred in Dhaka division, 1,228 in Chattogram division, 385 in Rajshahi division, 484 in Khulna division, 212 in Barishal division, 261 in Sylhet division, 289 in Rangpur division, and 130 in Mymensingh division.
