Covid-19: Infection spikes in the last 24 hours, 35 more die

Covid-19 infections in Bangladesh spiked from the previous day while the number of deaths remained exactly the same.

Bangladesh recorded 35 more deaths from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, taking the number of total fatalities to 4,351.

During the same period the country logged 2,582 more coronavirus cases, whereas the number was 1,950 on the previous day.

With this development, the number of all confirmed cases now stands at 317,528.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country with a press release on Wednesday.  

Of the 35 deceased, 23 were men, while 12 were women. So far, 3,408 men (78.33%) and 943 women (21.67%) have died of Covid-19 across the country.

Among the people who died in the last 24 hours, 22 were from Dhaka division, four each from Khulna and Chittagong division, one each from Rajshahi, Mymensingh and Barisal divisions, , and two from Sylhet division.

Of the total 4,351 deaths, 2,105 deaths occurred in Dhaka division, 943 in Chittagong division, 291 in Rajshahi division, 363 in Khulna division, 169 in Barisal division, 194 in Sylhet division, 194 in Rangpur division, and 92 in Mymensingh division, according to the press release.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.37%.

The DGHS said 15,734 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients in the last 24 hours. 

As many as 15,204 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 93 authorized labs — government and private — across the country, and 2,582 new patients were confirmed compared to the 1,950 on Tuesday.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 15.98%.

To date, 1,577,616 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 20.13% so far.

The health authorities said 2,839 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 211,016 patients — 66.46% of all infected — have made full recovery across the country.

Over-phone services

The DGHS said to make treatment facilities easily available for the Covid-19 patients, the government has introduced telemedicine services, comprising 70 physicians and 20 health workers, for round the clock service in the country.

A total of 284,047 people have so far received healthcare services from telemedicine.

The DGHS said 19,847,818 people received healthcare services from hotline mobile numbers and health web portals as the government formed a group of medical professionals to provide emergency healthcare services.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed 861,884 lives and infected 25,933,731 people across the world till Wednesday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 18,215,787 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 213 countries and territories across the planet.
