Covid-19 death toll in Bangladesh triples in a month

The total number of deaths due to Covid-19 in the country has more than tripled in the past month.

In the last 24 hours, 40 people have died due to coronavirus across the country. With the latest figure, the number of fatalities so far has risen to 1,661.

Prof Nasima Sultana, additional director general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), disclosed the figures on Friday during the daily Covid-19 online bulletin.

Till May 25, the number of Covid-19 deaths was 501. A total of 1,160 people have died since then, taking the toll to 1,661 on June 26, which is a threefold rise in just a month.

A total of five people died in March, 183 in April, and 482 in May from Covid-19.

Earlier, on June 10, the number of deaths surpassed the thousand mark. The DGHS reported a total of 1,012 deaths, including 38 deaths on that day.

The first Covid-19 patient was identified in the country on March 8 and the first person to die from the virus was on March 18, exactly 10 days later. A total of eight people died from Covid-19 till April 5 as deaths from Covid-19 was not a daily occurrence till then.

DGHS has been reporting regular deaths since April 6. The death count was below 10 per day till May 9. From May 10 to May 17 the single-day death count was between 11 and 19, from May 18 to May 30 that number was between 20 and 28. 

Since, May 31, the number of deaths in a single day has been increasing, and the number of daily deaths has gone to over 30. The highest body count in a single day was 46 in the country.

However, Bangladesh still has the lowest death rate among the Covid-19 affected countries in South Asia. In the last 24 hours, the death rate is 1.27%.

According to the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), 77% of the total deaths in coronavirus in the country are men and 23% are women.

Of them, 39% are over 60 years of age. In addition, 29.62% of them were aged between 51 and 60, 17.39% between the ages of 41 and 50, 8.29% between the ages of 31 and 40, 3.4% between the ages of 21 and 30, 1.49% between the ages of 11 and 20, and 0.82% under the age of 10.

Besides, 71% of the total infected by Covid-19 in the country are men and 29% are women. The infection rate is the highest among 21 to 40-year-olds. Then there are 41 to 50-year-olds who make up for 17% of the total, 11% between the ages of 51 and 60, 7% over the age of 60, 7% between the ages of 11 and 20 and 3% under the age of 10.
