Health minister: Covid-19 tests to be increased to 15,000 a day

Minister for Health and Family Welfare Zahid Maleque has said that the number of Covid-19 tests conducted across the country will be increased to 15,000 a day.

He made the announcement in a reception event for 5,000 nurses who have recently been recruited to combat the ongoing Covid-19 crisis held at the Directorate General of Nursing and Midwifery in Dhaka.

A press release was issued in this regard on Thursday. 

He said: “The number of samples tested for Covid-19 has increased by manifolds in the last one month. As a result of this we are being able to detect more coronavirus patients.”

“The more infected people we find, the lower the risk of infection gets. Meanwhile we have enough test kits in hand to conduct 15,000 tests a day.”

With this new addition, a total of 43,000 nurses will be working across the country, read the release.

As of Thursday, Bangladesh had confirmed 18,863coronavirus cases with the death toll rising to 283 after 14 new fatalities were reported.

Till now the fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 298,000 lives and infected more than 4,449,000 people globally, according to Worldometer.

As many as 1,671,556 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has spread to 210 countries and territories across the world.
