Commerce Ministry to strengthen market monitoring for price stability in Ramadan

The Ministry of Commerce is planning to intensify market monitoring during Ramadan to ensure the price stability of essential commodities.

The decision was made during a workshop held on Tuesday in the conference room of the Ministry of Commerce.

As part of this initiative, the ministry will strengthen its market surveillance efforts throughout the holy month.

Starting Wednesday, three dedicated teams will commence market monitoring operations across Dhaka.

The workshop was organized for team leaders assigned to oversee market stability in Dhaka and was attended by Md Abdur Rahim, the acting secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, as the chief guest.

During the workshop, it was announced that monitoring activities will cover fresh produce markets, grocery stores and supermarkets to maintain price stability.

Addressing the team leaders, the commerce secretary emphasized that the ministry's market monitoring teams, in collaboration with district administrations and special task forces, regularly oversee markets in Dhaka and other districts.

Additionally, the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection also conducts market surveillance, preventing illegal stockpiling and unethical business practices that could destabilize the market, he added.

He stressed the need for intensified supervision by ministry officials during Ramadan.

He further stated that while two teams usually monitor markets in Dhaka, from Wednesday onwards, three teams will be deployed daily to strengthen market oversight during Ramadan.

Highlighting the efforts of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, the secretary noted that six teams routinely conduct market inspections and this number will be increased to ten during Ramadan.

Additionally, the Ministry of Commerce will distribute leaflets and implement public awareness campaigns, including microphone announcements through local market committees, to enhance consumer awareness.
