All govt employees asked to submit wealth statements

The government has mandated that all public employees submit their asset declarations.

This directive was issued in a notice signed by Senior Secretary Mohammad Mokhlesur Rahman of the Ministry of Public Administration on Sunday.

Details regarding the process and deadlines for submission will be communicated to the relevant parties through upcoming meetings.

Under existing laws, every government employee is required to declare their immovable and movable assets at the time of joining service.

Subsequently, they must submit a statement on any changes in their assets every five years through the appointing authority to the government.

Although this procedure is part of the conduct regulations to combat corruption and ensure accountability, compliance has often been lacking.

Despite previous reminders from the Ministry of Public Administration, progress on this matter has been slow.

There has been a concern about corruption among some government employees. In light of this, recommendations have been made to ensure greater accountability.

Discussions have included whether submitting a copy of the asset declaration along with annual income tax returns to the National Board of Revenue (NBR) would suffice, instead of the five-year submission requirement.

The Ministry of Public Administration has also considered amending existing regulations to address these issues.

As a result, the interim government has now decided that all government employees must submit their asset declarations.

Additionally, on August 14, the interim government's Legal Adviser Professor Asif Nazrul said following consultations with the Supreme Court, all judicial officers and their family members must submit their asset declarations—both domestic and international—within 10 working days.
