Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud reiterated that the government would not misuse any laws against journalists or the media.
He said this while speaking at a work plan meeting to promote media industry and the welfare of journalists, at the Secretariat on Thursday, reports BSS.
Dr Hasan said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government is pro-media and massive reforms took place in the media industry during her tenure.
“The prime minister gave directives to the cabinet members and concerned authorities to implement the commitments iterated in its manifesto,” he added.
The minister outlined his work plan which included: housing facilities for journalists, constructing the 31-storied Bangabandhu Media Complex on National Press Club premises, training and encouraging journalists for investigative journalism, providing security to media employees, maintaining equal distribution of advertisement in newspapers and providing over-all support to the newspapers industry.
The minister said the new and existing initiatives will be taken keeping in mind the welfare of journalists.
Moreover, the government is considering gearing up the monitoring cell for detecting seditious rumours, he furthered.
Information Secretary Abdul Malek and other concerned officials of the ministry were present at the meeting.
