Foreign minister unaware of Modi’s visit to Dhaka

Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali yesterday said they have no knowledge about the possible visit of Indian Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi to Bangladesh.

“We still don’t know about it. We want that he visits Bangladesh,” the foreign minister told a press briefing.

Indian media had recently published reports that Modi would go on the first foreign trip to Bangladesh and during his visit, he would ink Teesta water sharing deal which was supposed to be signed during the visit of former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2011.

Mahmood said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her talks with Modi invited him to come to Bangladesh. “Let him take an oath and form a government,” he said.

Modi is set to swear in as the prime minister of India tomorrow and he invited the heads of government and state of the SAARC countries to attend the swearing-in ceremony.

Bangladesh Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury is expected to attend the programme on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

In its election manifesto, BJP said it would pursue a foreign policy based on “Equations will be mended through pragmatism and a doctrine of mutually beneficial and interlocking relationships based on enlightened national interest.”

According to its manifesto, BJP would work towards strengthening regional forums like SAARC and ASEAN.
