Duchess of Edinburgh due Monday

Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, will arrive in Bangladesh on Monday on a three-day visit to strengthen Bangladesh-UK ties and highlight support for the Rohingya community.

During her visit, she will meet communities and organisations working in areas of shared interest, including women's empowerment, education, cultural exchange, peacekeeping and humanitarian support.

The Duchess of Edinburgh will meet President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Prime Minister’s wife Dr Zubaida Rahman to discuss shared interests in the welfare, protection and the empowerment of women and girls.

She is visiting Bangladesh at the request of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. She previously visited Bangladesh in 2017.

Sophie will visit the Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operation Training (BIPSOT) to see the country’s vital role in UN peacekeeping and highlight the importance of women's participation in peace and security, said the British High Commission in Dhaka on Sunday.

At Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP), she will meet young athletes, including female hockey players, celebrating the role of sports in creating opportunities for women and girls.

The Duchess will also join a celebration with young people, championing education, cultural exchange and women's empowerment to mark 75 years of the British Council in Bangladesh.

She will travel to Cox’s Bazar to see the work of organisations supporting Rohingya refugees.

Sophie will hear about vital protection and support services for women, girls, and families affected by displacement, including work to strengthen resilience and leadership within refugee communities, and the rehabilitation, protection and inclusion services helping women and children to build a future despite displacement.
