The Embassy of Algeria in Dhaka commemorated the 65th anniversary of the Paris massacres of October 17, 1961, on Saturday, marking National Emigration Day under the theme “From the Depths of Memory to the Horizons of the Future.”
The ceremony, held at the embassy’s chancery from 11am, was attended by dignitaries, economic operators, academics, religious figures, Bangladeshi media representatives, Scouts, members of the diplomatic community and their families.
Addressing the event, Algeria’s Ambassador to Bangladesh Abdelouahab Saidani recalled the events of October 17, 1961, when peaceful Algerian demonstrators protesting a discriminatory curfew in France faced violent repression by Paris police.
The crackdown resulted in numerous deaths and injuries, with some demonstrators drowned in the River Seine, he said.
The ambassador highlighted the massacres’ historical significance and international repercussions, particularly their role in strengthening solidarity with Algeria’s struggle for self-determination. He also emphasized their enduring symbolism of sacrifice, resilience and human dignity.
Saidani underscored the Algerian diaspora’s contribution to the country’s national liberation and development.
The commemoration concluded with the screening of a documentary on the Algerian Muslim Scouts and their contribution to the national liberation struggle.
The film highlighted the Scouts’ role in promoting patriotic consciousness, mobilizing young people and upholding the values of solidarity, discipline, civic responsibility and devotion to the homeland.
It also paid tribute to the contributions of different segments of Algerian society to the independence struggle and the preservation of national identity.
