Nawab Sir Salimullah’s 155th birth anniversary marked in Dhaka

Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka on Tuesday organised a seminar titled “The Legacy of the Nawab: An Ode to the Life and Times of Sir Salimullah Bahadur” to mark the 155th birth anniversary of Nawab Sir Salimullah Bahadur.

The event paid tribute to his contributions as a statesman, philanthropist and educationist, and his role in shaping Muslim political consciousness in South Asia.

The seminar was attended by academicians, historians, researchers, media representatives and members of the Nawab family, including Nawabzada Khwaja Samiullah Askari, great-grandson of Sir Salimullah.

In his welcome address, Pakistan High Commissioner to Bangladesh Imran Haider said Sir Salimullah’s vision and leadership played a key role in the political awakening of Muslims in the subcontinent and in advancing their political rights. He also highlighted his role in facilitating the establishment of the All-India Muslim League in Dhaka in 1906 and his contributions to education and public welfare.

Speakers at the seminar discussed various aspects of Sir Salimullah’s life and legacy.

Dr Mohammad Alamgir of Asian University of Bangladesh traced the history of the Nawabs of Dhaka and discussed his leadership during a transformative period in Bengal.

Prof Nahid Afrose Kabir of BRAC University spoke on his contributions to education in East Bengal, saying his philanthropy had a lasting social impact.

Former Dhaka Tribune editor and Counterpoint editor Zafar Sobhan discussed his role in the evolution of Muslim political thought and representation in the subcontinent.

Nawabzada Khwaja Samiullah Askari shared personal reflections on his great-grandfather’s legacy and stressed the importance of continuing his ideals of public service and education.

At the conclusion of the seminar, the High Commissioner presented souvenirs to the speakers.

A photo exhibition featuring rare photographs and archival materials on Sir Salimullah was also held. Prayers were offered for his departed soul.
