Bangladesh, Turkey announce joint summit on ‘Women in Islam’

Bangladesh and Turkey have agreed to jointly host a global conference early next year focused on “Women in Islam,” aimed at convening leading Muslim scholars and researchers to highlight best practices in advancing women’s rights across Muslim-majority societies.

The decision was reached during a bilateral meeting between Bangladesh’s Adviser for Women and Children Affairs, Sharmeen Murshid, and Turkish Minister for Social Services, Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş, held in New York on Monday, according to Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder.

The two sides also committed to deepening cultural and technological exchanges and enhancing cooperation in the care economy and social services.

As part of this initiative, Turkey pledged to offer training and capacity-building programs to develop professional women caregivers for domestic and international markets, Sharmeen said.

She also serves as adviser for Social Welfare.

Both countries, signatories to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), agreed to share experiences, challenges, and achievements in promoting gender equity within Muslim societies.

The upcoming conference is expected to serve as a platform for dialogue, policy exchange, and global collaboration on women’s empowerment in Islamic contexts.
