Bangladesh-US second day of tariff talks concludes

The second day of the three-day tariff discussions between top-level officials of Bangladesh and the United States has ended in Washington DC.

In the meeting, presentations were made and mutual discussions took place regarding the pace and nature of current and future trade between the two countries would be, including tariff issues.

This information was conveyed in a message from the Press Wing of the Chief Adviser. The Press Wing stated that the two countries have reached a broad consensus on several issues. Some matters, however, remain unresolved.

On Friday at 9am Washington time, the third day of discussions will commence.

According to the message from the Press Wing, a notable aspect of the second day’s discussions was that Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin held a one-on-one meeting with US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamison Greer.

Greer is a highly important figure with the rank of minister in the Trump administration. In addition to tariff issues, the discussions with him covered trade and matters of mutual interest between the two countries in a cordial environment. In the talks, the commerce adviser presented an overview of Bangladesh’s overall situation.

Bangladesh claims to be committed to increasing not only exports to the United States but also the volume of imports, which has already begun. Bangladesh also expects fairness in tariffs so that the environment remains competitive for Bangladesh. Greer assured of overall cooperation.

The Bangladesh side was led by Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin. National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman joined virtually from Dhaka. Also directly present were Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman and Additional Secretary Dr Nazneen Kauser Chowdhury. Senior government officials and experts also joined virtually.
