Dhaka is pressing ahead with tariff negotiations with Washington, with a high-level meeting scheduled for Wednesday in the US capital, according to Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser Shafiqul Alam.
In a Facebook post on Monday morning, Shafiqul confirmed that a Bangladeshi delegation led by Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin is already in Washington, DC, for the discussions. National Security Adviser Dr Khalilur Rahman is also part of the team.
“Dhaka is looking forward to a tariff deal with Washington DC, which, we hope, will be win-win for both countries,” Press Secretary Alam added.
The talks come after US President Donald Trump on Monday sent formal letters to the leaders of 14 countries, including Bangladesh, outlining the final tariff rates. Bangladesh received its letter, Alam said.
After nearly three months of negotiations, President Trump has set a 35% tariff on imports from Bangladesh. He announced the decision on Monday through a statement on his social media platform Truth Social.
Earlier, on April 3, Trump imposed retaliatory tariffs on several countries, raising tariffs on Bangladeshi goods to 37% at that time. Previously, Bangladeshi products faced an average tariff of around 15% when entering the US market.
